Right in the center of the Interior Community, you'll find the true heart of Alaska. The centrally located Fairbanks is the second largest city in Alaska is one of the cities that was populated by the gold rush of the late 19th and early 20th century. Considered to be one of the most prosperous places for miners, Fairbanks was flooded with people from across the U.S. and Canada, and the trading post quickly became the hub of activity in interior Alaska.

Fairbanks truly distinguishes itself from many southern neighbors by offering travelers some of the most magnificent natural attractions on earth. From September through April you can catch glimpses of the aurora borealis or "northern lights," the natural phenomenon that casts green and red lights across the night sky. The Chena Hot Springs and Aurora Borealis Lodge are great places to view this work of nature.

Known as one of the best museums in Alaska, the University of Alaska Museum of the North contains more than 1.4 million specimens and artifacts in archaeology, arts, earth sciences and marine life, among others. The Rose Berry Alaska Art Gallery hosts works over a 2,000 year span, from the earliest ivory carvings to modern day native art. To see the largest gold exhibit in the state, you need look no further than the museum's Gallery of Alaska.

Due to the harsh nature of the climate in Fairbanks, with six months of winter beginning in October and temperatures dropping to near freezing, summer months are the best time to arrive in Fairbanks. You shouldn't miss July's World Eskimo-Indian Olympics, a rare opportunity to see traditional contests of strength, endurance, balance and agility. Accompanying these sporting contests are traditional Indian and Eskimo dance teams, along with high-kick contests and the Miss Eskimo Olympics Queen Contest.

There are attractions during the winter months as well, like the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race. This prestigious race follows 1,000 miles of historic dog sled "highway" routes between Fairbanks and Whitehorse, Yukon. As the host city alternates between the two each year, it is best to find out if Fairbanks has hosting duties for maximum enjoyment of this tradition. One of the other benefits of low temperatures is the opportunity to see the World Ice Art Championships in February and March. Artists from around the country compete in single and multi-block events, and visitors can vote for their favorites along with the judges.

For a bit of history, you need look no further than Pioneer Park, a historic theme park evoking the days of the gold rush and complete with replica gold rush towns and restored railroad cars.
