The only town on the eastern side of the Kenai Peninsula, Seward is also one of the few Alaskan tourist towns to keep its small town charm intact, limiting the influence of larger chain restaurants and strip malls. This makes the trip slightly off the beaten path (that is, on the opposite side of the peninsula) a welcome treat on your RV tour of southern Alaska.

Seward boasts all of the access to wildlife you'd expect from a Southcentral Alaskan town. You can being your wildlife tour at the Alaska SeaLife Center on Resurrection Bay, a modern aquarium which was paid for in part by funds from the settlement of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Harbour seals, sea lions, walruses and sea otters call the SeaLife center home, many of whom have been rescued by the Alaska SeaLife Center Rescue and Rehabilitation department. While the goal is to prepare these animals for release back into the wild, those who are unable to re-integrate into their natural habitat can find a permanent home here, or be transferred to a more suitable location.

A half- or full-day cruise through the nearby glaciers is another essential element of a trip through Seward. Or you can visit Exit Glacier, in Kenai Fjords National Park, which is accessible by land from Seward about 4 miles outside of town.

For more Seward-specific attractions, try to plan your trip for the Annual Seward Silver Salmon Derby' in August. This fishing extravaganza is huge in the world of sportfishing, and offers a cash prize to the winner. Competitive sports extend to the famous Mount Marathon Race during the 4th of July weekend, which draws huge crowds who watch athletes race up and down all 3,000 feet of the Mount.

A true taste of Alaska in steward is dog mushing (or sled racing) the state sport. Tours allow you to meet Iditarod racers, pay with husky puppies and take a dog sled ride around Resurrection Mountain. Some tours can be expensive, but many will combine dog mushing trips to other attractions like Exit Glacier, giving you a full Seward experience in a one-day tour.
